For the last year I have been sharing how to build better businesses. Everyone here is a service provider, whether you are inside someone else’s business as a dedicated employee, or building your own business.
We have been looking at growth opportunities, and in Episode 189, we talked about the “next best self” mentality. Today we are going to take that a step further and talk about gaining “career clarity.”
“I want to help you to see what your gift is, and I want you to curate an experience you are able to deliver on, so you can monetize it.”
What Kind of Business should you be building at this moment
From an operational and a service provider perspective, there are four clear paths:
- Retainer: recurring revenue where you are providing a scope of services on a monthly basis
- Project: a shorter term project with an end date
- Agency: you lead a team who supports the business that you bring in
- Product: something that is delivered on a one to many scale (course, masterclass, membership, etc.)
That is the order that we recommend if you are building a business.
A retainer model is best if you feel like you don’t know where to start. It’s for those who are looking for financial stability, but who are not comfortable with doing a lot of marketing.
Projects are great, but to sustain the same income as a retainer you will need to have a higher volume, which means you will need to be doing a lot of promoting, sales calls, and networking.
An agency model is a one-to-many model, and you will need a greater volume of business because you have more people on your team.
A product model will require a lot more marketing, and you will also potentially need to invest in software and tools (and potentially other service providers) to provide the delivery of the product.
Ask yourself, “Which model should I be doubling down on right now?”
Do you need financial stability? Do you want to do a hybrid model? If you need help figuring which one is right for you, we built a quiz to help you!
Your Ideal Client
Who are you working with right now, and do you need to up-level that avatar?
Are they the right avatar, or is it time to shift?
Think about all of the people that you have served. Make a list of the person you enjoyed working with the most. What was it that you loved about working with that person?
Conversely, who was your anti-avatar? Who was the client that you couldn’t wait to break up with, and why?
Is there an industry, a personality trait, or business structure that did not serve you well?
Write those things down so you can have clarity. Make sure this messaging is present on your social media and how you show up in your businesses.
“Make sure you are aligned with your avatar, and update your messaging so you can step into [your next best self] with greater ease.”
What is holding you back?
I know that a lot of you who are listening are fact finders and perfectionists.
“We are going to have to push past perfectionism to take action and to make sales.”
Ask yourself what is holding you in inaction. People will plan themselves past perfection, and not take any action.
Action creates confidence and confidence creates cash.
Every time we are planning perfection, we are delaying on taking action. If we don’t take action, we will never get the feedback we need to continuously progress.
Dig deep, and look at the things you are avoiding. If I had to guess, I’d say the things that you are avoiding are making connections, getting on calls, and putting infrastructure in place to where you can make sales easily.
Make a post today and get it out on social media, hit publish on your website or reach out to someone on your lead list. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect!
For you to step into your next best self, you have to be authentic and be seen.
“You will be incapable of generating revenue by sitting behind a computer, looking for perfection.”
Business is about connecting with people so that you can move them into your sales cycle.
With practice you will evolve into your next best self!
“If we have clarity, we can create a path, and with that path we will move into action.”
This is exactly what we do in the Director of Operations Certification program. We help you with the knowledge and the tools to get clarification in your journey!
