How do you stay motivated and on top of tasks without feeling overwhelmed?
- The scope of project can change, but as operators our brains function the same, and we will reverse engineer everything
- We create mini milestones or tasks and compartmentalize info naturally
- We naturally have a very long running to-do list
- Our brains work differently and because we see things in small pieces we have a lot of things competing for our time
- If we measure success on how many things we get done in a day and our list is super long, we feel that overwhelmed because we are not able to accomplish as much as we want in a day
- Know that we have to set realistic expectations as to how much you can get done
- Pick 1-3 things you are definitely going to get done today
- Set and hold boundaries so you don’t get stuck and mismanage your time
- You have got to rest
- Take a physical break; disconnect from the environment and regroup
- Lean on someone (a business bestie, a friend, or your partner)… sometimes you just need to let it all out before you regroup
“If you see that you are not taking any action, you probably need to ‘download’ all of the things you have going on in your mind… and be realistic about what you can accomplish in a day.”
What is the difference in the scope of work of a COO vs a DOO?
- A COO is someone who comes into an established business
- At least 15 years of experience
- Has a specialty in financials or human resources
- They are extremely strategic and are able to cast a vision for the operations of the company
- A DOO has a lot of experience with strategy and management
- A holistic leader
- Has good experience in the 5 different areas of the company
“I take titles with a grain of salt.”
How do I answer when the CEO asks “what is the next step, and how will you grow with the company?”
- In a DOO role, you need to decide if you need to grow in breadth and in width OR in depth in a discipline
- Do you need to round out skills in the 5 disciplines? {HR, financials, project management, strategy, KPI’s)
- Do you need to go deeper in one of the 5 disciplines?
- Look at the company and assess what they need: this will help you to create a development plan within the company
- Make sure you know your job description, and cast a vision for the future
- What are you doing today, and what could you be doing in the future?
“It’s not just about you, but how you can develop [yourself] to serve this company.”
