I had the honor to be invited as a guest on “Confessions of a Terrible Leader” with Layci Nelson. I’m excited to share my interview with you today!
At the beginning of our chat, I answered the question – “Is everyone a leader?” I believe everyone has the ability to be a leader. It’s about the choice to step up and be dedicated. Leadership can come in many forms and we all have the potential to lead if we choose to embrace it.
The Unseen Heroes: Operations Leaders
We dive into what Directors Of Operations are and how they are the unsung heroes who thrive behind the scenes. DOOs are the backbone of any business, supporting the CEO and the company’s mission.
From “Yes Ma’am” to “Yes Maybe”
A pivotal moment in our conversation was my explanation of the transition from a “yes ma’am” mentality to a “yes maybe” approach. This shift allows you to go from task-oriented to strategic thinking alongside the CEO. It’s about being able to offer alternative strategies, moving from simply executing tasks to shaping the company’s direction.
Setting Clear Expectations: The Key to Successful Leadership
One of the most valuable takeaways from our conversation was the importance of setting clear expectations for new hires. I share my confession that I haven’t always set those clear expectations from the start. I emphasize the necessity of job descriptions and a structured plan for the first 30, 60, and 90 days. This clarity ensures that both full-time employees and temporary hires understand their roles and can contribute effectively from the start.
Wrapping up with gratitude and anticipation
As we concluded our conversation, I shared my excitement for the upcoming 23rd round of Directors Of Operations Certification at The Ops Authority. I am thankful to have been a guest on Layci’s podcast and I can’t wait to hear how much you enjoy today’s episode!
Go manage like a leader, and let’s continue to transform our “terrible” leadership confessions into powerful lessons for success.
“The thing that I wish I could undo from certain times in my leadership is not setting and effectively communicating the expectations of the role.” – Natalie Gingrich
