Lynette Robinson is back with me for another episode of The Ops Edition, where we answer your most pressing questions straight from our DOO community and The Ops Insiders Facebook group. These aren’t rehearsed responses or polished scripts. This is real-time coaching on the topics that keep operators up at night: how to explain what you do without fumbling, how to network locally when you’ve built your entire business online, and whether to niche down or stay open as you grow. If you’re looking for actionable insight on messaging, meetups & momentum, you’re in exactly the right place.

How to Articulate What You Do as an Operator
This question comes up constantly, and for good reason. Lynette broke down a powerful formula for crafting your messaging: first, identify your purpose and passion as an operator. Second, clarify who is best served by your work. Third, practice your message until it flows naturally. When you know what you do, why it matters, and who it’s for, confidence replaces nervousness. I added that you should also have a list of your core skills ready, like project management, HR, or leadership, so when someone gives you a blank stare at the word “operator,” you can go one layer deeper with clarity and ease.
Building Local Connections That Actually Convert
Lynette shared her exact strategy for networking locally, starting with LinkedIn. She cleaned up her profile, disconnected from her corporate past, and spent 30 minutes daily connecting with local small business supporters. She engaged authentically, not to pitch, but to build genuine relationships. Next, she used Eventbrite to find local events and connected with attendees ahead of time so she’d have friendly faces when she arrived. Finally, she partnered with colleges and universities, offering her expertise as a consultant, judge, and instructor. Some of those opportunities were even paid.
I added two more strategies: joining local networking groups like women’s business organizations, and connecting with your Chamber of Commerce. Both opened doors to referrals, speaking opportunities, and deep community ties that online networking alone could never replicate. If you’ve been hesitant about local meetups, this conversation will shift your mindset completely.
Should You Niche Down or Stay Broad?
This question came from a new business owner wondering if she should niche or stay open to a variety of clients. Lynette reminded us that niching isn’t just about industry. You can niche by demographics, psychographics, problem, or skill. Even if you’re brand new, narrowing your focus just a bit creates clarity. I flipped the script and said offer before avatar. Know what you want to deliver before you worry too much about who you’re delivering it to. As you gain experience, your natural preferences will emerge, and your niche will refine itself.
Why Messaging, Meetups & Momentum Matter Now More Than Ever
These three questions represent the core challenges operators face when building or growing their businesses. Your messaging must be clear, confident, and rooted in who you serve. Your meetups, whether online or local, must be intentional and relationship-driven. And your momentum comes from taking consistent action, checking in with yourself quarterly, and refining your approach as you grow. Lynette and I both agree: operate with intention, no matter where you are in your journey.
